If your parent does not have a social security number, no worries. Your parent will sign the paper authorization and we will mail it in.

Winter Recess Homework

BEFORE you leave for Winter Break, you must log in to www.dellscholars.org and verify your eligibility for this scholarship.

To do this:

1. click on "register to start a new application"

2. click on the REGISTER button at the bottom

3. complete requested information (NOTE: for current cumulative GPA use the weighted GPA on your most recent transcript, choose AVID as the approved college readiness program, and that you will attend college full time or part time)

4. Show me whether or not you are eligible by Friday, December 20 for credit.

Homework:  If you ARE ELIGIBLE, your homework is to complete and submit the application by January 15, 2014.(list Elizabeth Lowe as the adviser lowe_elizabeth@montebello.k12.ca.us)  If you are NOT ELIGIBLE, you must complete 3 scholarship applications (in addition to the 3 required for semester 1). Recommended websites include:  www.latinocollegedollars.org. You may also apply for scholarships using the Scholarship Bulletins that come out of Ms. Brendzal's office or this link for additional options.

AVID Weekly - Should Derogatory Mascots Be Banned?

These are the materials distributed in class on Wednesday, Dec. 11. You may make copies if you lose them. You need to read and annotate BOTH articles AND complete the graphic organizer (T-Chart) by Friday. Bring articles and graphic organizer to class on Friday so you can write the persuasive essay. Essay, annotated articles, and graphic organizer are all due by the end of class on Friday.

Instructions:

2. Preview questions #4-7 and take Cornell Notes on the video (keeping the questions in mind).

3. After the video (you may want to watch it again or back it up), answer #4-7 on your sheet of notebook paper.

4. Answer #8-9 on your sheet of notebook paper.

Read and annotate the following articles that were distributed in class and can be found here:

Things to Toss: College Rankings

Teens Should Just Still Rise and Shine, Just Later in the Day

Then, write (and type) a short but well-supported response to the following questions citing evidence from the articles:

Response 1 (for Article 1): According to the article, why do  people pay attention to college rankings? Is this something you considered during the application process? (200 words minimum)

Response 2 (for Article 2): What reasons does the article offer to support a later start time for school? Is this something you agree with? Cite evidence from the article and explain your reason for agreeing or disagreeing. (200 words minimum)

Both responses due to Turnitin by December 4.

Commerce to College - Extra Credit

Attend the Commerce to College Fair on Saturday, Sept. 21 at Veteran's Park (10am) and submit a 350 word reflection that details what you learned. Please bring any additional college brochures you don't wish to keep so I can add them to our classroom folder. Thanks.
